The rule most designers use
Hang art that is about two thirds as wide as the furniture under it, and up to three quarters if you want it to feel bold. So over a 72 inch sofa, aim for roughly 48 to 54 inches of art. One poster will not reach that on a big sofa, and that is fine. Two or three of the same size in a row, with a couple of inches between them, add up to the same width.
The finder above does the sums for you. It takes the width of your space, works out how wide each poster would hang, and marks the best fit. Portrait and landscape give different answers, so it asks which way you will hang it.
How high to hang it
Galleries hang with the middle of the picture about 57 inches from the floor, because that is close to eye level for most adults. Over a sofa or desk, leave about 6 to 10 inches of bare wall between the furniture and the bottom of the frame. If the two rules disagree, go with the gap. It is a guide, not a law, so stick a few strips of painter's tape on the wall first and stand back.
These are the usual interior design rules of thumb. Fine Art America and Frameology both explain them if you want a second opinion.

What about my photo?
A bigger poster needs a bigger photo file. If you are not sure yours is big enough, the guide to preparing your artwork and the pixel and print-size table show what each file will print well at. We also tell you before you pay if a size is too big for your file.
Our sizes
The table lists every poster size we print, in inches, with today's price. Some are US sizes you may recognize from frame shops, and some are international sizes with the nearest inch figure beside them. Check the inches before you buy a frame.
Questions and answers
What size art goes over a couch?
About two thirds of the width of the couch, and up to three quarters for a bolder look. Over a 72 inch sofa that is roughly 48 to 54 inches of art, which can be one big piece or two or three posters side by side.
How high should I hang a poster?
Put the middle of the picture about 57 inches from the floor, close to eye level. Over furniture, leave about 6 to 10 inches between the furniture and the bottom of the frame.
Should I hang it portrait or landscape?
Over a sofa, bed or desk, landscape usually looks right because it follows the furniture. Portrait suits narrow walls, hallways and the space beside a window. The finder shows the width for either.
Can I try the size before I buy?
Yes. Cut paper or newspaper to the size, or use painter's tape, and stick it on the wall for a day.
Do I need a big photo for a big poster?
Bigger sizes need more pixels. We check your file before you pay and tell you which sizes it suits.
