Gifts for painters: their own work, printed

The best gifts for painters start with something they already painted. Brushes and paints are a guess unless you know the brand and size they use. A finished painting, or a figure they painted, can be printed from a photo of the original and hung on a wall. The same photo will also fit a mug.

This guide sorts painting gifts by the painter you're buying for. Each one starts from a photo of their own work and ends at something we print from it, made to order from the file you upload or the preview you approve.

Gifts for painters that start with their own work

Think about which piece they talk about most. It might be the field scene they gave to a sister, or the portrait that took a whole winter. Start with that one. You need a sharp photo of it and the painter's agreement to have it reproduced, and then you choose what it goes on.

We print by two routes. The direct route, Print your original artwork, prints the uploaded image as it is, cropped to the product, unchanged. The second, Create a scene, is only for photos of painted miniatures: it puts the figure in one of five settings, and nothing prints until you have approved a watermarked preview. For a painting on canvas or paper, use the direct route.

For the painter who works in watercolor

If the whites in their watercolor are bare paper, pick a surface that keeps them white. Our art prints are on 250 gsm uncoated, off-white archival paper, from 8 x 10 in up to 27.6 x 39.4 in (70 x 100 cm). A paper print of a painting on paper keeps the same kind of surface, and it is sold unframed, so it can go into a frame they already own.

Check the shape before you order. Every poster size is close to 1 to 1.4, so a squarer painting is trimmed along two edges to fit, and the upload shows you that crop before you pay. Leave wood prints for a different painting: on wood, pale areas let more of the surface show through, which suits a warm palette better than an open white sky.

For the painter who works in oil or acrylic

For a painting made on canvas, a canvas print keeps the same kind of surface. Our canvas prints come in four sizes: 11.8 x 15.7 in (30 x 40 cm), 15.7 x 19.7 in (40 x 50 cm), 19.7 x 27.6 in (50 x 70 cm) and 23.6 x 31.5 in (60 x 80 cm). The sides of the stretched canvas aren't folded-over parts of the painting. We fill them with a soft band built from a blurred copy of the picture's own colors, so the front shows the whole crop you checked.

Match the shape before the size. Measure the original: a painting 12 in tall and 9 in wide has a 3 to 4 shape, the same as the 30 x 40 cm and 60 x 80 cm canvases, so it fits either without a trim. A 16 x 20 in painting is 4 to 5, the shape of the 40 x 50 cm canvas. Any other shape is trimmed along two edges, and the crop preview shows you where.

Varnish and thick paint reflect light in patches, and a reflection in the photo prints as a pale smear. Move the light farther around to the side until the shine leaves the frame, then take the photo square on.

For the painter who has finished a first piece

Someone in their first year of painting may not want anything they made on a wall yet. A mug gets around that. It's used, not displayed, and it puts their first finished painting in their hand every morning without asking them to call it art. Our custom mugs are 11 oz and printed with the image you upload.

A mug is small and curved, so choose a painting with one clear subject near the middle. A single flower or one figure works; tiny lettering and a wide view with detail at both ends don't. The print area doesn't cover the whole mug, so check how the image sits in it on the product page before you order.

For the painter whose canvas is a miniature

Miniature painters put hours into a figure that most people only see from across a table. A sharp photo lets it be seen at poster size. Our framed prints come in 11.7 x 16.5 in (A3) or 16.5 x 23.4 in (A2), in a black or a natural wood frame, and a single figure against a plain background reads clearly from across a room. The frame is real wood with a plexiglass front, and the print is your own photo, sent through the direct route unchanged, and cropped only to fit the frame.

The photo matters more than the frame. Light it with a diffused lamp or indirect daylight against a plain background. Bring the camera down to the figure's eye level and support the phone, and keep the whole figure in shot, base included. If the nearest part is sharp and the face is not, move back a little. How to photograph miniatures goes through the setup. For a painter with a whole army finished, gifts for miniature painters also covers the painting desk and the display shelf.

For the painter who wears the hobby

A shirt takes their work out of the house. Our custom T-shirts are white Gildan 64000 crewnecks in S to 2XL, printed on the front in an area about 12 x 16 in, with the back left blank. There is also a black Gildan 18500 custom hoodie, printed in an area about 12 x 12 in above the front pocket.

The direct route prints the whole uploaded image, background included. A painting photographed with a white margin, or a figure shot against white card, sits cleanly on the white shirt; a figure on a gray backdrop prints as a gray rectangle. On the black hoodie it works the other way around, and a black backdrop blends into the fabric.

For the painter who wants to see their figure somewhere new

This idea is for miniature painters only. Create a scene takes a photo of a painted figure and places it into a new setting: Woodland Path, Paintwork Portrait, Hero Portrait, Into Battle or The Tavern. The scene is meant to replace the display base with ground that suits the setting, and to leave the painted figure as it is. The photo needs at least 800 pixels on its shortest side.

You verify your email, upload the photo and see a watermarked preview first. The scene can shift small details, so before you approve anything, put the original beside the preview. Start with the face and hands, then move to the equipment and any freehand work. Nothing is printed until you approve a preview, and if none of them looks right, the plain photo can still go through the direct route. Checking your scene lists what to look at. A poster gives the setting room around the figure.

Photograph the painting before you wrap anything

The print can only be as good as the photo. Take the painting out of any frame with glass. Shoot it outdoors on an overcast day, or indoors beside a large window with a sheet of white card bouncing light back from the other side, and switch the room lights off so two colors of light don't meet on one surface. Hold the phone square to the painting so the top and bottom edges look the same length, then compare the photo with the original side by side. How to photograph artwork covers each step.

The upload takes a JPEG, PNG or WebP file of 10 MB or less, then checks each size against the pixels in the file, and a size the file is too small to print sharply cannot be selected, so a file too small for a large canvas is never sold as one.

Ask before you print someone's painting

Ask the painter before you reproduce their work, including a painting that hangs in your own house, and ask for the photo they are happiest with. Asking for a photo of one piece tells them a print is coming, but not what it will be printed on. Every upload asks you to confirm that you have the rights or permission to reproduce the image, and that covers any picture or character the painting copies.

What a print of a painting can and cannot do

A print is made from a photograph, so it carries what the camera caught. Thick brushstrokes show as light and shadow in the picture, not as ridges you can feel, and metallic paint prints as the color the camera saw, without the shine. Paper only reflects light, while a phone screen makes its own, so the brightest colors usually look a touch calmer on paper than on screen.

What the print does give them is a copy that stays after the original is sold or given away, or goes back into a portfolio, on an object the original was never meant for. For someone who draws or works digitally, not paints, gifts for artists covers the same idea, and making prints of your art explains what happens between the file and the finished print.

The gifts in this guide

Questions and answers

What are some cool gifts for painters?

Something made from their own work: a finished painting printed on canvas or paper. A photo of a painted figure works too, framed or on a mug.

What is a good gift for a professional painter?

Ask which painting they wish they had kept. With their permission, a print of a sold piece keeps a copy on their own wall, and the direct route prints it as photographed.

Will a print look like the original painting?

It's a printed photograph of the painting. Raised brushstrokes and metallic paint show as image, not texture, and color depends on how evenly the painting was lit when it was photographed.

What size should I choose?

Measure the original and pick a size with the same shape, then think about the wall. The upload checks every size against the file and withdraws any size it cannot print sharply.

What does every painter need?

Paint, brushes, something to paint on and good light, and a painter who’s been at it a while owns all four and has firm views on brands. That’s why a gift that adds to the kit is a guess. A print of a finished painting isn’t: photographed square-on in soft light, it can go on canvas, an art print or a mug. If they’re new to miniatures, miniature painting supplies lists the starting kit and what each item is for.
