Ask before reproducing
Having a photograph of someone’s work doesn’t automatically give you permission to print it. Ask the artist and use a file they’re happy to share. For a surprise, choose the product together and keep the occasion secret instead.
Notice how they use their space
A desk mug may suit someone with a crowded studio. A framed miniature portrait might fit a dedicated display shelf. Think about their daily life before choosing the largest option.
Let the file decide the size
Once they send the photo, upload it before you settle on anything. Every size is graded against that file, so you find out straight away whether it can carry a big canvas or is better suited to a mug or an A4 print. Ask for the original file, because a copy forwarded through a messaging app is usually smaller than the one on their camera.
Respect the work
For a finished illustration, direct printing keeps it unchanged. For a painted figure, ask whether a new setting would be welcome. Don’t assume that a dramatic transformation is an improvement on the work they made.

Sending it straight to them
Tick “This is a gift” in the cart, and at checkout give the artist’s name and address as the delivery address. Nothing in the box shows what you paid. We don’t print or pack a gift message; any note you add is returned to you with your order confirmation, so you can write it in a card yourself.

What is a good gift for someone who enjoys painting?
Something made from their own work: a print, a mug or a shirt carrying a painting they finished. Ask for a file they are happy to have reproduced, then choose the product together, or keep only the occasion a surprise.
Will a photo of a painting print well?
A photo taken in soft, even light with the camera square to the work usually does. The upload checks the file against every size and withdraws any size the file cannot carry.
Does printing change their artwork?
Not on the direct route. It prints the uploaded image cropped to the product, unchanged. The scene studio is a separate, optional route.
